Tutorial 2 Circular Pattern 

Requirements: Adobe Photoshop 5.0 or 5.5
The Project:  To create a circular pattern.  Great for backgrounds of other images.

Once you have started the program. 

Click File, Click New, you will then get a box that you can use to determine the site and resolution of your image.

Just for this example change your settings to:

Width 5 inches   
Height 5 inches   
Resolution 72 pixels/inch
Mode RGB
Contents Transparent

Click Create New Layer on your Layers Palette.  Click the Foreground Color on your toolbox and fill the newly created layer with Red. Picture 2-1.

Click M (Marquee Tool).  Now start at the top of the image and draw a rectangle selection about 1/2 an inch high all the way across.  Now change the Foreground color to black.  Hit the K key to activate the Paint Bucket and fill the selection with black. Picture 2-2

Here comes the fun part.  Hold down the Alt and Ctrl buttons while dragging the selected black bar.  Drag one for every half inch.  Picture 2-3

Click Ctrl-D to deselect the rectangle.  Go to the Filter drop down at the top of the screen and choose Distort, Polar Coordinates.  Make sure Rectangular to Polar is selected. You should then get an image similar to Picture 2-4.

Lets make the outside around the circle dark.  Click the W and your tool will change to the Magic Wand.  Click any area outside the circle with the Wand.  Now click K to change to the Paint Bucket and Fill the area with Black.  Click Ctrl-D and save your image which should look like Picture 2-5 below.
