6 Extracting in Adobe Photoshop 5.5
Requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 5.5
The Project: Extracting an element from one
image and placing it in another image.
One
of the greatest things about the new version of Adobe Photoshop
5.5 is the new Extracting feature. One of the most
common things you will do in the world of graphics is combining
elements from different images to create something original.
Extracting in Photoshop can save you a ton of time.
So lets get into how this works.
See
the two pictures above? The one on the left is the beach
in Maui, Hawaii. The picture on the right is my dog
Sadie. I took the beach photo while I was in Maui on
my honeymoon in November of 1998. The photo of Sadie
was taken in June of 2000. Since Sadie has never been
to the beach, I think we need to take her there. So
the project is to remove Sadie from my backyard and put her
in Maui, Hawaii. Piece of cake.

First
thing we need to do is open both images. Once
they are open, we jump right into removing Sadie from
the photo in my backyard. We do this by clicking
Image> Extract. You now will have an Extract
window.

Now
make sure the top button on the left is clicked.
This is the highlighter tool. We will use this
to create an outline of the object we want to remove
from the image. You can customize how big and
what color the highlighter will appear when going
around your object using the menu on the right side.
Now use the highlighter to go around Sadie like in
Picture 6-2. It doesn't have to be perfect,
just try to make sure you get basis of the outline.
Extract will do the rest in a minute.

|
For
Extract to do its thing we have to give it the information
on what area we want to be extracted. So click
the second button on the left hand side menu which
is the Fill Tool. Using the Fill Tool click
inside Sadie. If you have your fill settings
set to blue Sadie will now be blue with a green outline
like in Picture 6-3.

|

|
Click
the Preview button on the right hand side. You
should have a pretty good outlined Sadie like Picture
6-4. Click ok. You now have the image
of Sadie with no background. Sometimes you will
have to erase some things the Extract missed, such
as fur. So use the Eraser tool to clean up the
rough edges around Sadie.
|
|
Once
you have Sadie looking the way you want, drag and
drop into your beach image. If you want to
resize the layer click Edit> Transform> Scale.
When you have the object the size you want, double
click and it will apply the changes. I ended
up with the image in Picture 6-5. Sadie is
now in Maui, Hawaii. You will find a ton of
uses for this in the future trust me.
