Tutorial 3 Photo Inside Text

Requirements: Adobe Photoshop 5.0 or 5.5 OR Corel Photopaint 8 or 9
The Project: Placing a photo inside of text

To place a photo inside of an object shape or text is a very common sight in advertising everywhere.  When you complete this tutorial, you will be fascinated at how easy this is to do.  Enough talk lets get to it.

One of my current favorite bands is the band Union.  What I will create as an example is a picture of Union that I took, inside the word Union.  If you haven't heard of this band, check out their official website at: www.unionasylum.com.  Now on with the project.

Adobe Version
Settings are up to you, just give yourself some room to experiment.  Now find and open that special picture that is going to placed inside your cool thick text.

Hit T and type the word you want to place the picture inside.  I chose the Compacta Blk BT text.  Right click the background layer containing your photo using the Layers palette and click Duplicate Layer.  You will now have a layer most likely called background copy.  Now delete the original background layer by right clicking and choosing delete layer.

Using the Layers Palette drag the background copy layer over the text layer.  Now the cool part.  Hold Ctrl and click G.  Just like magic your photo is now inside the text.  If you want to adjust the placement of the photo, move the photo around to get it where it looks the best.

Once you get it where you want it you can add some effects to it.  Click the Text Layer in the Layers Palette and do the effect of your choice.  I chose Bevel and Emboss with the settings in Figure 1-4.  Then I changed the Color Balance under Image and Adjust to get just the right color.

Now you should flatten the image, save it and you should have something similar to Figure 1-5.

Try to make the text fill most of the picture for the best results.  Now we need to pick a thicker type of text so that the picture will show through.  Hit T and Click the Render Text To Mask button in Figure 1-7.  Choose your font.  I choose Compacta Blk BT text. Type the word you want to place the picture inside.

Now click Edit on the top program bar and click Copy Visible.  Now we are going to create a New Document with only what is inside the mask.

Click Edit and Paste As New Document.  Your new document should look like Figure 1-9.

Once you get it where you want it you can add some effects to it.  I changed the Color Balance under Image and Adjust to mostly a blue looking color.  Now you have to add a mask to the layer.  Just click Mask and Create from object.  I then chose Effects, 3D Effects and The Boss using these settings: Width 10, Height 39, Smoothness 54, Drop off Mesa and Invert.

Now we need to save the artwork.  So Click Object and Combine All Objects With Background.  Click Mask and Remove Mask.  Now save.  You should have something similar to Figure 1-9
